Olho de Boi — Bull’s Eye

The stamp that placed Brazil among the pioneers of world philately.

On 1 August 1843, Brazil issued its first postage stamps: the legendary Olho de Boi — Bull’s Eye. Appearing in denominations of 30, 60 and 90 réis, they made Brazil the first country in the Americas to issue national postage stamps and one of the earliest nations in the world to adopt prepaid postage. Rather than portraying the young Emperor Dom Pedro II, Brazilian authorities chose an elegant numeral design. One reason was the desire to avoid having the Emperor’s portrait cancelled with postal markings; practical concerns involving engraving and counterfeiting also influenced the decision. Correios

The large numerals were surrounded by an intricate black engine-turned pattern. Their distinctive oval appearance inspired the name “Olho de Boi” — “Bull’s Eye.” The elaborate background also helped make the stamps difficult to counterfeit. Correios

More than a postal artifact, the Olho de Boi represents a moment when Brazil stood at the forefront of a new way for the world to communicate.

With Archive 010, this landmark of Brazilian postal history takes on a new form. Reimagined as a 100-piece miniature puzzle, the Olho de Boi becomes an object to assemble, contemplate and collect.
